00:00:00.017 --> 00:00:04.177
OK, let's talk about this just for a minute, because I think it's it's a really
00:00:04.177 --> 00:00:10.937
important thing in facilitating organizational change, but it's kind of fluffy.
00:00:11.137 --> 00:00:12.937
So it'll be interesting to chat.
00:00:15.600 --> 00:00:24.880
Music.
00:00:24.717 --> 00:00:27.917
Hey, everybody, Todd Conklin, Pre-Accident Investigation Safety Moment.
00:00:27.917 --> 00:00:32.157
But it's those little tiny moments where we get together and talk, and they're fun to do.
00:00:32.397 --> 00:00:35.697
Although many of you tell me you don't like them as much as the long ones,
00:00:36.177 --> 00:00:39.217
but nonetheless, it's what we do. It's how we do it.
00:00:39.337 --> 00:00:42.717
And I kind of like them because you can sort of start ideas,
00:00:42.717 --> 00:00:45.037
and then if they're interesting, you can make them longer.
00:00:45.397 --> 00:00:49.397
Today, I want to talk to you about the idea of being happy.
00:00:50.037 --> 00:00:54.877
Now, it's weird, and I've thought about this a lot, in fact, most of my life.
00:00:55.217 --> 00:00:58.757
And I kind of think happiness is, in essence, kind of a choice.
00:00:59.137 --> 00:01:02.457
Now, there's a context around that. And you sort of have to choose.
00:01:02.597 --> 00:01:06.977
When something happens, you can choose to be angry or you can choose to not be angry.
00:01:07.237 --> 00:01:10.837
You can choose to be sad or choose to be happy. It's just kind of how you frame it, right?
00:01:11.277 --> 00:01:15.257
But I think one of the things that happens, especially in organizations,
00:01:15.257 --> 00:01:20.037
is when we're up against a difficult change, There's lots of resistance to the
00:01:20.037 --> 00:01:22.117
change. People don't want to change.
00:01:22.417 --> 00:01:31.157
That we oftentimes see happiness as the opposite of challenges, of the change itself.
00:01:31.417 --> 00:01:37.697
And I actually would share with you guys straight up that I think that's wrong.
00:01:38.377 --> 00:01:43.937
Just like we say failure is an essential part of success, I think happiness
00:01:43.937 --> 00:01:48.057
is an essential part of organizational change.
00:01:48.377 --> 00:01:53.977
And you can read happiness as satisfaction or smoothness.
00:01:54.297 --> 00:01:59.237
That would be a good way to say happiness. But I think we can't see them as
00:01:59.237 --> 00:02:01.117
oppositional because they're not.
00:02:01.737 --> 00:02:06.777
And so one of the key components, and I do think this is a reasonable and important
00:02:06.777 --> 00:02:11.277
thing to say, of creating significant change,
00:02:11.617 --> 00:02:17.257
a philosophical shift, if you will, in an organization, is to ensure that as
00:02:17.257 --> 00:02:18.457
that shift is happening,
00:02:18.917 --> 00:02:24.057
the people are happy, that you're happy, that leadership is happy,
00:02:24.057 --> 00:02:28.757
and creating opportunities to sort of build on happiness.
00:02:29.217 --> 00:02:36.857
Because a happy group of people is much more prone to really accept significant
00:02:36.857 --> 00:02:40.517
challenges than an angry group of people.
00:02:41.440 --> 00:02:44.780
Think about it. I mean, it's a really interesting idea. That's the pod.
00:02:44.900 --> 00:02:45.800
I mean, it's that simple.
00:02:46.060 --> 00:02:51.140
But that's kind of what these little tiny pods do is introduce these ideas.
00:02:51.300 --> 00:02:55.000
And again, if it's worth talking about, tell me and we'll talk about it more.
00:02:55.120 --> 00:02:58.600
Until then, learn something new every single day. Have as much fun as you possibly
00:02:58.600 --> 00:03:00.300
can. Be good to each other. Be kind to each other.
00:03:00.420 --> 00:03:02.640
And for goodness sakes, you guys, be safe.
00:03:03.280 --> 00:03:15.455
Music.
